You’ve been in the same position for months, maybe even years, watching co-workers move up while you stay put. That promotion you were counting on never came through. Your manager seems too busy to discuss your development, and the company’s training programs seem outdated or non-existent. In short, your career feels stuck.
You’re not alone. Just 45% of Americans say they feel in control of their careers, according to LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence survey. And the uncertainty isn’t just in the U.S. We’re in an era of do-it-yourself career development, where companies offer formal training far less often than they used to. According to LHH’s 2024 Global Workforce of the Future Report, the “Great Resignation” has shifted into the “Big Stay.” Their study of 30,000 workers across 23 countries shows that uncertainty has made employees more hesitant about making career moves. In fact, 52% cite external factors, while 51% mention “fear of the unknown” as obstacles to career growth.
